SPRING 2025
Kindergarten Screening Appointments, May 21 or June 4 We will try to assign your child to your preferred date. Assigned times will be emailed to parents/guardians.
-
“What is kindergarten screening?” Children are observed as they play and participate in activities with peers who are also entering kindergarten. The first half of your child’s appointment will be spent interacting with staff and other children. The second portion of your child’s appointment will be spent individually working with adults. The staff will get to know some of your child’s strengths and needs in the following areas of development: cognitive, language, motor, self-help, and social. In one sense, it is a “snapshot” of your child on a particular day.
-
“Why must children participate in this process?” Children participate in this activity so that we may anticipate some of the strengths and needs of our incoming students. The screening process helps us to form well-balanced classrooms. This is the goal for the entire Jacobs Elementary School.
-
“How can I best prepare my child?” You know your child better than anyone. It’s best to prepare him/her in the same way you would in anticipation of anything new. Please let him/her know that he/she will have an opportunity to meet several other incoming kindergarten students. Tell him/her that he/she will get to play learning games with adults who work in his/her new school. Let him/her know that you will be with adults in a nearby room while he/she plays with other children and meets some of the teachers. Let him/her know you will meet him/her in the same location as soon as the activities are finished.
Kindergarten Orientation, May 15 (Time TBA)
- Incoming Kindergarten students meet at the Jacobs School Playground for Pizza & fun, followed by a school bus ride around the immediate neighborhood.
